Moving Tips

If you choose to pack your belongings yourself, there are many packing techniques you can use to ensure the packing is as efficient as possible. Read on for some helpful moving guidelines from R. Wald & Sons Moving & Storage Ltd. However, if you still need assistance, don’t hesitate to call us.

On an Important Note

No single box should weigh more than 50 pounds, but 30 pounds is ideal.
Heavier boxes can result in injuries and are more likely to burst their tape or seams, allowing the box contents to spill out.

Get Organized

  • Start planning your move early. You will likely find that you have more stuff than you thought.

  • Start planning by creating two room lists, one for your current space, and one for your future space. This will help you envision what has to go where.

  • Go to each room of your current space, writing down the types of items that need to be packed, including furniture, length of shelving and closets.

  • Make sure you leave yourself enough time for planning. Many people find that it takes up to a month to pack their belongings. One study reported that it could take 4 to 5 hours to pack an average dorm room. This should give you an idea of what’s going to be involved.

  • Get a calendar and plan what day you will complete packing each room.

  • On a weekly basis, track where you are in your move against the date on the calendar. If necessary, revise your plan.

Find Quality Movers

  • If you plan to hire professional movers, do your research, and hire good ones (like R. Wald & Sons Moving & Storage Ltd.).

  • Poor quality movers can often be worse than having no movers at all.

  • Get referrals from friends who have moved recently.

Packing Tips

  • Pack a suitcase as if you’re going on a 3-day trip for each family member and place it in the bathroom so it doesn't get loaded on moving day. Packed items should include changes of clothes, medications, toiletries, etc.

  • Separate the packed suitcases from the other items to be moved so you’ll have everything you need for the first few days without having to rummage through moving boxes.

  • Create “open first” boxes for each room that you pack. These boxes should contain items that you will need first in your new living space.

  • Work on packing one room at a time as opposed to several simultaneously to stay focused and organized.

  • Use packing as a way to discard unwanted belongings that can be donated, sold in a yard sale, or recycled. This process will ultimately save you time and money.

  • Instead of placing boxes to be packed on the floor, use a tabletop or counter to reduce back strain. Doing so will allow you to stay more organized, getting more accomplished.

  • When taking apart or disassembling items to be moved, make a special box for screws, bolts for bed, table, etc. that have to be dismantled. This way you’ll know just where to find them, saving time when you are ready to reassemble the items.

  • Use pillows, towels, and clothing as extra padding around fragile items. It will save space in your boxes.

  • Stack boxes with the heaviest on the bottom to prevent crushing.
